The Essence of Tang Soo Do
Tang Soo Do is a traditional Korean karate that can be literally translated as, “The Defense Hand Way.” The origins of Tang Soo Do can be traced back over 2000 years ago to the period of the Three Kingdoms of Korea. The military warriors of the time used Tang Soo Do for battlefield combat techniques as well as a form of physical, mental, and spiritual development.
The essence of Tang Soo Do is the self improvement of ones mind, body, and spirit.
Tang Soo Do trains the mind of the student to focus their energy towards a specific direction with well defined goals. Students are taught to develop discipline, concentration, and self control in order to maximize their ability and potential. With each accomplishment, their confidence grows and standards are elevated.
Tang Soo Do trains the body of the students to generate powerful defenses and attacks utilizing virtually every part of the body. The blocks and strikes of traditional Tang Soo Do are designed to be directed and focused to maximize power upon impact and subdue attackers as quickly as possible. A fundamental knowledge of anatomy enables the student to apply techniques that achieve the greatest effect under all circumstances.
Tang Soo Do trains the spirit of the student to be open and good. The spirit is an important characteristic as we seek to improve the quality of life as well as the lives around us. Students are taught to be respectful to everything around us, be humble in their action, be loyal to their leaders, and bring honor to their name, school, and country through the choices they make.
