Tang Soo Do is traditional Korean karate that can be literally translated as, “The Defense Hand Way.” The origins of Tang Soo Do can be traced back over 2000 years ago to the period of the Three Kingdoms of Korea. The warriors of the time used Tang Soo Do in the battlefield as well as a form of physical, mental, and spiritual development.
The essence of Tang Soo Do is the self-improvement of one's mind, body, and spirit.
Tang Soo Do trains the mind of the student to focus their energy towards a specific direction with well-defined goals. Students are taught to develop discipline, concentration, and self-control in order to maximize their ability and reach their potential. With each accomplishment, their confidence grows and standards are elevated.
Tang Soo Do trains the body of the students to generate powerful defenses utilizing virtually every part of the body. The blocks and strikes of are designed to be directed and focused to maximize power upon impact to subdue attackers as quickly as possible. Fundamental knowledge of anatomy enables the student to apply techniques that achieve the greatest effect under all circumstances.
Tang Soo Do trains the spirit of the student to be open and good. The spirit is an important characteristic as we seek to improve the quality of life as well as those lives around us. Students are taught to be respectful, humble, loyal, and honorable through their choices and actions.
In our Tang Soo Do curriculum, students will learn the following skills. These skills will progressively become more complex as students progress through the belt rank system. These skills have been specifically designed to progressively help students maximize the potential of their mind, body, and spirit.
